Auburn vs. Penn St. Weekend

As someone who loves to travel for away games and visit other college towns, I wanted to provide a little guide that can guarantee you have the best gameday experience when visiting Auburn! Keep in mind, our town has so much to offer, but this is going to center more on Downtown Auburn.

Thursday Afternoon Arrival: Congrats, you made it! You are ready to roll right in and grab a drink. Head over to our newest restaurant, Tavern on the Traxs. They have a wonderful back patio with comfy seating and a patio bar. Grab an appetizer, too!

Thursday Night: Our culinary scene is incredible! We recommend dinner at Acre, The Hound , The Depot, Esposito’s or Hamilton’s.

Thursday “late” Night: Head over to The Collegiate Hotel. They have an amazing patio(with an Instagram-worthy mural) and a rooftop bar. They even have live music this Thursday evening.

Friday Morning: If you just need a little coffee to get your day going, swing into Bitty and Beau’s or Auburn Oil Co. Booksellers. If you want a nice breakfast, check out Ariccia (inside the AU Hotel and Conference Center). If you want a quick breakfast, Big Blue Bagel or Mo’Bay Beignet is great, too.

After Breakfast: The weather is unseasonably cool right now, so head over to Chewacla State Park. There are over 600 acres featuring hiking trails, a lake, playground, waterfalls, bike trials and more! Read more about Chewacla.

Friday Lunch: You have probably worked up an appetite. If you are wanting to sit down and grab a cold beer, Mellow Mushroom or Drafthouse are great and both have wonderful beer selections! If you don’t mind waiting in a line, then check out Irritable Bao or Taco Mama. These are counter-service restaurants that our locals go crazy for!

Friday Afternoon: Now it’s time to get some shopping done. If you are an Auburn fan and need some gear, head over to J&M Bookstore or Stamp. Need a hostess gift or something to bring the tailgate host, go to Wrapsody or Auburn Art. Need a cute, new gameday outfit, Behind the Glass, Charming Oaks, Ellie, Elisabet Boutique, fab’rik and Therapy are all walking distance of each other. For the guys, The Locker Room will have you dressed your best! Grab a snack when you finish up all that shopping at The Auburn Popcorn Company.

An alternative to shopping - go make your own candle at The Auburn Candle Company.

Friday Night: You will notice the town getting a lot busier! Try one of the restaurants we mentioned for Thursday night if you want a nice, fancier option. For quick-service but still yummy, Little Italy Pizza and Moe’s BBQ are fantastic(both have indoor and outdoor seating).

Friday(late) Night: If you want the full experience, then you have to go to Southeastern or 17/16. They both will have live music. If you are older and don’t care to be among all the college students, then head upstairs at Southeastern or go to Avondale.

Saturday: After breakfast(see Friday recommendations) snap a photo at the War Eagle wall, grab lemonade at Toomer’s, finish the shopping you missed on Friday and find a place to tailgate or watch the game(if you aren’t going). Halftime is a great, local sports bar with big TVs if you need somewhere to watch the game. Need food for the tailgate, Guthrie’s or Whataburger can offer bulk serving sizes.

After the Game: If we win, take part in one of the best college football traditions, rolling Toomer’s Corner! Win or lose - Grab a sweet treat at The Milkshake Bar! It will cheer you up!

Other Important Info to Know:

We have two parking decks. One off of Wright St. and the other off of Burton St. You will want to use these! It’s $1 an hour with no max time limit. Wright St. deck is $30 to park on gameday. More info on parking.

Every Friday before a home football game, we celebrate Come Home to the Corner. We will pass out gameday buttons at 4 pm, hold a pop-up merch shop(Auburn t-shirts that support our merchants association) and we have live music near Toomer’s Drugs from 6-9 pm. It is also an Entertainment District from 4-10 pm which means you can purchase a drink and take it to-go.

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram Six

We are back with another Enneagram number, type Six. This one is also not an easy number for me to write about. I feel like it should be since I am married to a Six, but I kept questioning myself out of fear that I would get it wrong. Now, I am acting like a six. A six is known as “The Loyalist”. They are trustworthy, they are honest and they will make you feel safe. They do tend to worry about making the right decisions and can become anxious easily. I don’t think that is a bad trait to have, though. Sixes can take these traits and they will make great leaders, employees and friends.

Retail for a Six: Charming Oaks - Sixes can get hung up on the “what ifs”. “what if I can’t find something to wear”, “what if they have nothing that fits me”. These could all be valid concerns for a six. So, the safest option for a six would definitely be Charming Oaks. It is one of the largest retailers in downtown which means they have a ton of inventory.

Restaurant for a Six: Mellow Mushroom - Sixes may question things, like “Is this the right decision”. Well, let me tell you what you will not question….pizza! You can’t walk into Mellow Mushroom and feel like you made a bad decision. The menu doesn’t change, they don’t run out of pizza, and it is always good! Sixes also enjoy their friendships and being part of groups, so grab some pizza to-go for your next group setting.

Bonus for a Six: Auburn Bank - A Six is called “The Loyalist”. When thinking about businesses that are “loyal”, I think about Auburn Bank. Auburn Bank has been apart of the Auburn community for over 100 years and that speaks volumes. They are dedicated, trustworthy and will check every box for the Type 6!

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram Five

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram Five

Ok, so I am about to head into some unknown territory for me. The Enneagram 5 is probably the total opposite of the type 2 in me. As a two, I love people and talking to people and I want them to share anything and everything with me. After learning more about the 5, that is exactly what they avoid. Hey, that’s totally ok, too. I get it. A Five is more reserved. They are not going to share information with you and would much rather keep to themselves. They tend to avoid crowds and do not want to be seen(like our type 3 friends). They are also very habitual about their day to day routine.

Retail for a 5: Elisabet Boutique - it’s one of the smaller boutiques in downtown which means it is not very crowded, but most importantly they have a HUGE online boutique boutique where you can shop their latest arrivals on an app(or their Facebook page) on your phone from the comfort of your couch. You can opt to pick up your order in store or have it shipped to you.

Restaurant for a 5: Five Guys Burgers and Fries - I can see where a recognizable name would be appreciated by a 5. Since 5’s are habitual in nature, this could offer a since of comfort to dine at an establishment that they may have already dined at in the past in a different location. A 5 may not want to sit down and dine, so grabbing this grub to go is an easy one and will still taste great! Our Five Guys is still owned by a local business owner, so you still get to support local.

Bonus for a 5: Ariccia at the Hotel at Auburn University - Ok, hear me out! Fives probably aren’t going to gravitate towards a crowded restaurant. They also may want to dine alone and sip some wine while reading a good book. Ariccia is the perfect spot for this. Another bonus, you may not run into someone you know and be forced to make conversation but you are likely to meet someone new and that could be a good thing for a 5!

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram Four

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram Four

The Individualist, that’s what our Enneagram Four friends are known as. I don’t know too much about the type four, so I did a little extra research on this one. The Fours stand out, they don’t typically do “normal”. They are their own unique self and pride themselves on that. They are authentic, creative, self-aware but can be reserved, too. When reading about the four, I immediately thought about downtown businesses that remind me of these characteristics.

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram 3

Downtown Auburn for the Enneagram 3

Hey all you cool cats and type Threes! This one is for you. Type 3 is known as The Achiever. Threes really can and do achieve great things in the world. They are the "stars" of human nature, and people often look up to them because of their graciousness and personal accomplishments. They strive for greatness, but will make sure you are pushing yourself to that same level of greatness. They are your biggest “cheerleaders” when you need one.
